Introducing Inlite, the Industrial YAG laser system

Continuum introduces a new high energy YAG laser platform designed from the ground up to satisfy the needs of users in Industrial applications. Named Inlite, the design is compact and extremely rugged, drawing on the years of experience Continuum has in commercial product development. The basic design features combine the best elements of our broad product portfolio to deliver unmatched performance and reliability.

Convenience and flexibility are important characteristics for an Industrial laser design. Inlite delivers by incorporating Smart Card technology inside the laser head. The on-board microprocessor manages the laser head housekeeping functions as well as providing a platform capable of managing the plug-and-play options and accessories. Harmonic generators for 532 nm, 355 nm and 266 nm fit inside the laser head; there is no need for an external module. Pyro detectors can be added to control the laser in power mode or diagnose harmonics conversion efficiency. An automated attenuator is available for active power control. There is even a method to link an external power monitor to the laser head for system-level control. All of these features can be controlled from the on-board microprocessor in the laser head.

Field service and support were carefully considered in the Inlite design. Both laser heads and power supplies are interchangeable, with quick disconnects at both the laser head and power supply. The novel power supply architecture delivers smooth pulse profiles to the lamps. The result is lamp lifetimes over twice as long as alternative sources. Lamp changes are fast, and since the lamp leads are not immersed in water there are never issues with corrosion of the cathode leading to catastrophic failure of the laser head. More up time and fewer service calls are characteristics of a true Industrial design.

The Inlite power supply consists of two sub-modules: electronics and thermal management. The electronics module is designed to support the entire family of Inlite products, and to provide the interface to the host system. The full-featured command set is run over an RS-232 bus; there is also a parallel open interface. A simple Windows-based graphical user interface is available for stand-alone operation. External TTL trigger and sync signals are available for low jitter operation.

The thermal management module can be configured for closed-loop water-to-air exchange, or water-to-water exchange. The system monitors water flow to the laser head and laser head temperature as well as DI liquid level and DI resistance. These features improve system reliability and process reproducibility. The power supply can be configured as either a standard 6U rack-mount for ease of system integration, or a stand-alone tower for increased mobility.

Applications for Inlite include materials processing, Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF), range finding, particle detection, inspection, marking and remote sensing. For more information, please contact your local Continuum representative.
